Description

A massive wave of immigration to Israel from the former USSR in the 1990s left an indelible mark on Israeli society. Having moved to Israel from Georgia when he was 17, director Roman Shumunov (Berenshtein, TJFF2022) interviews fellow members of “Generation 1.5” – those born in former Soviet Republics who moved countries when they were pre-teens or teens, including actress Ania Bukstein (Game of Thrones, The Secrets). Now fully-assimilated adults, they reflect on their dual identity and discuss the discrimination they faced and the compromises they made to fit in. The film also offers a deep dive into the Russian hip-hop community in Israel, and uses archival footage to show media bias against the Russian newcomers.
