5th Paragraph – Invalids offers an intelligent juxtaposition of Soviet propaganda with the harsh reality of being Jewish in a country that purported to be multiculturally diverse. What challenges were faced by Soviet citizens who had “Jewish” as a nationality in their passport? Riga-born filmmaker Boris Maftsir, who immigrated to Israel back in 1971 following his arrest by the KGB, interviews people who made their Aliyah from the USSR in the 1970s and the 1990s. What emerges are unapologetically honest and at times outright surprising revelations that feel especially timely today. A perfect companion piece for Generation 1.5.
