Description

The Mourning Suit is the first feature film shot in Winnipeg, and the first film made with the newly formed Winnipeg Film Group. Allan Moyle (star of Montreal Main and future director of New Waterford Girl and Pump Up the Volume) plays Herschel, a young Jewish cellist who returns to his hometown looking to reconnect with those he left behind. He rents loft space in a warehouse where an old tailor lives out his fantasies of a once-thriving garment factory. The Mourning Suit was the first screenplay by director Leonard Yakir (Out of the Blue) and Joe Wiesenfeld (Anne of Green Gables), both children of Holocaust survivors who grew up in Winnipeg's North End. The cast also features Norman Taviss (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz) and boasts one of the few film performances by Brenda Donohue, a star of the Toronto theatre scene at the time. Presented in a new 2K digital restoration.
