A Louis Negin Double Dip: The Silent Partner & Hirsch

A tribute to the late actor Louis Negin, largely known for his larger-than-life roles in the films of Guy Maddin. Here, you can see him in two dramatic pieces set in Winnipeg.

Largely forgotten, the 1957 CBC teleplay, The Silent Partner, features Negin as the son of a Jewish widow (Miriam Wolfe) who is struggling to encourage his mother to make plans for the future, after the traditional twelve month of mourning have ended. Set in 1919, the year of the legendary Winnipeg general strike, The Silent Partner remains a surprisingly touching Jewish family drama, featuring a boyish Negin at the very start of his career, alongside the lovable Sammy Sales, a staple of CBC drama and variety of the time.

In Noam Gonick’s short impressionistic biography, Hirsch, Negin plays the voice of legendary theatre director John Hirsch (also being honoured with a double-bill in this Winnipeg screening series).
