Description
Produced at CBC Winnipeg, this sensitively-made TV drama is based on author Fredelle Bruser Maynard’s bittersweet childhood memories of being the only Jewish kid in a small Protestant prairie town in 1920s Manitoba. Bruser Maynard herself performs the narration in this wonderfully-evocative production about a young outsider, who feels even more alone during Christmastime. In addition to the on-location filming in Manitoba, its lead performances by eight-year-old Susan Moser, Montreal actor Howard Ryshpan and singer-actress Miriam Breitman (who had her own TV variety show in Winnipeg) lends a truthfulness that transcends most television drama of the era. An episode of the CBC anthology series Performance, Raisins and Almond was produced under John Hirsch during his tenure as head of the drama department at the network.
