Description
Director David Ofek (No. 17, A Hebrew Lesson) offers a fascinating exploration of the reasons behind the excommunication of the 17th century philosopher Baruch Spinoza from the Jewish community of Amsterdam. At the time, rabbinical authority deemed that Spinoza’s questioning of God and the divine origin of the Hebrew bible were heretical. Centuries later, this was considered a formative event in the development of Western Jewish thought. The film further reveals that time has diminished neither the controversy surrounding Spinoza’s radical ideas nor their relevance within contemporary culture. This film is the 17th instalment of producer Yair Qedar’s The Hebrews Project, which creates documentaries about influential Jewish writers.
