Join us for this international film series with our partner The Prosserman JCC. We will travel the globe with a screening each month at the Leah Posluns Theatre. Come an hour early and enjoy some cuisine inspired by the film for an additional fee and stay after the screening for a discussion with guest cinephiles.

The Price of Sugar has Gone With The Wind written all over it. Set in 18th century Suriname, this lush period piece and riveting melodrama reveals the history of the Dutch Jews who were among the slave-owning plantation owners in the former Dutch colony. Sarith lives on a plantation with her personal slave, Mini-Mini (who is also her half sister) and her stepsister, Elza. Frustrated by her unhappy marriage, the independent Sarith schemes within the male-dominated society she inhabits. Narrating the events is Mini-Mini who holds the impossible position of being a slave, confidante and half-sister rolled into one.

Neta Riskin (Shtisel) stars in this charming film about a young woman figuring out where and with whom she feels most at home. Noa is an Israeli living in Berlin with her musician boyfriend. Encountering unexpected obstacles in her work and personal life, Noa makes a spontaneous decision to visit Israel. She welcomes the sunshine and seeing her family, but soon begins remembering why she left her homeland in the first place. Filled with humour and emotional depth, Anywhere Else is a wonderfully enjoyable film about coming to terms with oneself.

ANTON (2019)

Set in a Ukrainian village in 1919 where German immigrants and Jews live side by side in the wake of the Russian Revolution, this moving drama explores the unbreakable bond of friendship between Jakob, a Jew, and his Catholic friend, Anton. The imaginary world they create shields them from the violence and divisions surrounding them. When Anton’s family escapes to seek a new life, memories of the boys’ friendship sustain them, shaping their lives until they finally reunite as old men. Based on Canadian author Dale Eisler’s novel of the same name, Anton marks director Zaza Urushadze’s (Academy Award nominee, Tangerines) final film before his death at 54.

Tomer Sisley and Bar Refaeli lead a French and Israeli all-star ensemble cast in this exciting international espionage thriller. Surprised to hear about the assassination of Mahmoud al Mabhouh, Mossad agents try to find who is behind the murder. Kidon cleverly weaves a labyrinth of plot twists that keeps the action moving and the audience guessing.

In this charmingly offbeat French comedy, Ruben is enjoying an idyllic life as a postal carrier in a small Finnish town where he lives with his boyfriend Teemu. But a series of events finds Ruben kicked out of his house and on a plane back to his family in Paris. A wonderfully entertaining look at the ups and downs of love and family. Featuring a terrific cast that includes Amira Casar (Call Me By Your Name) and Carmen Maura (Volver, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown).
