THE HARVEY ATKIN TRIBUTE TO CANADIAN MEDIA: TED ALLAN'S MONTREAL

One of Canada’s most distinctive writing talents and raconteurs, Ted Allan was a renowned playwright (The Secret of the World), screenwriter (Lies My Father Told Me, Bethune: The Making of a Hero) and author (Love is a Long Shot, Don’t You Know Anybody Else?). Raised in Montreal’s scrappy St. Urbain Street neighbourhood, the idealistic Allan went, as a young man, to Spain to fight the fascists, and later to England where he was one of the pioneering writers in the early days of British television. Back in North America, his career was adversely affected by Cold War anti-Communism. In his later years, he achieved success at home and in the U.S.

This two part-series presents two films based on Allan’s reminiscences of growing up in 1920s and 30s Montreal—the Canadian classic Lies My Father Told Me, presented in a loving restoration, and the CBC teleplay Love on the Nose (based on his story, Love is a Long Shot), with a terrific cast including Saul Rubinek, Marilyn Lighstone, Maury Chaykin and Eugene Levy.
