Description

Orit Ofir Ronell vividly recounts the story of the rise and fall of her immigrant grandfather’s food business in this fascinating documentary. Arriving from Bulgaria in the early years of statehood, and settling with his family in Jaffa, Sami Alkolombris sold his home-baked ‘börek or ‘boureka’ from a street cart in Jaffa. They were so popular that he soon opened his own bakery, establishing the first food franchise chain in Israel. Through interviews with various relatives and lots of archival photographs and film, Ronell pieces together the history of family conflict, which, over two generations, spelled the demise of the Sami Bourekas Empire, a national institution.
