The Black Book was a comprehensive collection of testimonies and articles documenting the annihilation of nearly three million Jews in Nazi-occupied Soviet territories. Famous Soviet writers Ilya Ehrenburg and Vasily Grossman initiated its publication which was banned in October 1947 by Soviet authorities, marking the first step of repressing Jewish culture and history under Stalin’s regime. Attempts to destroy the manuscript nearly succeeded in wiping the Holocaust from Soviet history and memory. Using a treasure trove of archival footage, this illuminating documentary explores how the ban was a planned stage in removing Soviet Jews from positions of power and changing the status of Jews in Soviet Russia.
