Description
The extraordinary life of French feminist icon Simone Veil is given its cinematic due in this masterful biopic from director Olivier Dahan (La Vie en rose). Starring Elsa Zylberstein (Mina Tanenbaum) and Rebecca Marder (A Radiant Girl), the film covers the gamut of her remarkable achievements, from prison reformer, abortion rights advocate and finally, the first female president of the European Parliament. Dahan cleverly leaves Weil’s harrowing experiences in the Shoah to the latter half of the film, thereby putting her later achievements into historical context, underscoring the impetus for her dogged pursuit of justice and universal human rights. A trail-blazing champion for civil rights, Weil’s humanist message is still keenly relevant today.
