Description

Katya Ustinova’s directorial debut offers an elegiac last glimpse of the Shtetl towns of Russia, located in what is currently Ukraine and Moldova. At one time, these tight-knit communities were possessed of a rich and vibrant culture in which Yiddish language and folklore thrived, alongside Jewish faith and practices. Now they lie silent and mostly abandoned, save for a handful of gentile residents who carry on their neighbours’ traditions, keeping their spirit and memory alive.

Review “Ultimately, the film celebrates the spectrum of experiences of Soviet Jews, and as Ustinova said, it demonstrates to American audiences 'that the world of their ancestors actually outlived Fiddler on the Roof and the war and the Soviet Union.'" - Russian Film Week USA
