Description
TJFF presents a rare 35mm print of a Canadian gem. “Wise, witty and funny... sparkled by Alan Arkin and James Woods and a first rate supporting cast.” (Judith Crist) Woods stars as Joshua Shapiro in this ambitious and colourful adaptation of Mordecai Richler’s bestselling novel. The son of an exotic dancer and a small time bootlegger, Joshua falls in love with the upper-class Pauline (Gabrielle Lazure), and becomes involved in the tribulations of her politically and socially prominent WASP family. Alan Arkin is exceptional as Reuben Shapiro, Joshua’s gangster father, who quotes the Bible with a hilarious earthiness. Also starring Kate Trotter, Michael Sarrazin, Linda Sorensen, Chuck Shamata and Harvey Atkin.
