As a tribute to the late director/writer/actor/producer/activist Rob Reiner, TJFF presents a rare screening of the little-known 1978 series, Free Country, a passion project he created with Phil Mishkin right after All in the Family. This funny and charming sitcom-style TV series has Reiner playing an 89-year-old Lithuanian-Jewish immigrant as he recalls his younger self—also played by Reiner—on the Lower East Side as a newly-arrived immigrant at the turn of the last century. Though it aired for only a few episodes, “Free Country deserves a footnote in the Rob Reiner filmography as the start of the multi-hyphenate artistry.” (Thomas Doherty, The Hollywood Reporter)
