Description

TJFF presents this rare early acting appearance of filmmaker and actor John Kastner to commemorate his recent passing. Adapted and directed by Jack Kuper, this production of Elie Wiesel’s novel was made at the CBC but never aired; it was Kuper’s directorial audition, a practice of the CBC to try out prospective directing talent. Kastner along with George McCowan and Tobi Weinberg star in Wiesel’s story of members of the Jewish underground in the British Mandate of Palestine waiting to assassinate a British officer in retaliation for the hanging of a Jew. Kuper’s intelligent use of the camera in the single location of the story’s setting still remains effective, anticipating the inventive filmmaking of his later independent productions, such as Run! and Who was Jerzy Kosinski.
