Winner of Best Film and Best Actor at the Jerusalem Film Festival, Chained is a riveting examination of masculinity in contemporary Israel. Working mostly with non-professional actors who mine their own experiences to create a story, director Yaron Shani (Ajami) deftly combines documentary realism with fiction, resulting in a uniquely authentic voice. Eran Naim, a former policeman in real life, is utterly convincing as Rashi, a cop whose constant exposure to violence has warped his world view. His need to control others transfers to his personal life, where he comes into conflict with his wife and headstrong teenage step-daughter. When Rashi is suspended from duty after a sexual harassment complaint, his rage intensifies, pushing him to extremes.
