Description

In commemoration of his recent passing, TJFF celebrates the life and career of writer Howard Engel with this engaging look at the creator of Canada’s most enduring crime fiction series and private eye, Benny Cooperman. Director Scot Morison captures the story of the man behind the sleuth, from Engel’s early days growing up in St. Catharines to his many professional successess—as an author as well as a correspondent, writer, and producer for CBC Radio—including his reception of an Order of Canada. Equally remarkable is Engel’s personal battles later in life: In 2001 he suffered a debilitating stroke that left him unable to read. Colleagues, critics and family recount Engel’s successful struggle to maintain his writing career without the ability to read his own writing, a struggle that initiated a friendship between him and Dr. Oliver Saks.
