Few people are familiar with Barbara Rubin, a pioneering underground filmmaker who introduced Warhol to the Velvet Underground show, Dylan to Jewish mysticism, and was an influence on Lou Reed and Allen Ginsberg. This omission is rectified by this riveting portrait of an artist who, at seventeen, apprenticed with the legendary filmmaker Jonas Mekas and directed Christmas on Earth, a sexually graphic hybrid of multi-media installation and performance art. We follow her trajectory from avant-garde artist to Orthodox homemaker who renounced her radical past.
