Description

Irene is an exuberant 19-year-old aspiring actress intent on gaining a conservatoire place. Attractive and confident, she falls in and out of love, assured of her bright future. Irene’s irrepressible optimism is at odds with the reality of 1942 occupied Paris. Acclaimed actress Sandrine Kiberlain’s directorial debut feature skilfully avoids sensationalizing the looming catastrophe, focussing instead on the protagonist’s wilful denial of the incremental warning signs of what lies ahead for the Jewish population. The price of that denial is a cruel reminder of the tragedy that follows.

Winner, Best Screenplay, Torino Film Festival
Nominee, Golden Camera Award, Cannes Film Festival
