Description
Richard Lester’s lavish film adaption of the beloved musical comedy is presented in honour of the late Stephen Sondheim, who wrote the play's music and lyrics. Zero Mostel plays an idle slave in Ancient Rome who has made a deal to win his freedom if he can procure for his master (Michael Crawford) the beautiful virgin slave he desires. However, a chain of bizarre complications conspire against him, resulting in plenty of anarchic comedy. The film also provides the only opportunity to see Mostel and Jack Gilford (as Hysterium) onscreen together, proving to be a wonderful comedy team, and their duet, “Lovely” is one of the film’s many highlights. Also starring Phil Silvers and Buster Keaton.
Part of the special archival series, JACK + ZERO.
