24th Toronto Jewish Film Festival | May 4-14, 2017

CHAIR'S MESSAGE

PHYLLIS ANGEL GREENBERG

CHAIR

On behalf of the Board of Directors, welcome to the 24th edition of the Toronto Jewish Film Festival!

How wonderful it is to once again enjoy stimulating and entertaining features and documentaries over 11 days and in multiple venues. We will see many familiar faces in the audiences, perhaps some we have seen at one of the Chai Tea presentations, or some we have not seen since last May. We will greet each other and enjoy sharing the filmmakers' artistic visions. From documentaries to dramas, from comedies to CBC archival films, and from filmmakers all over the world, the choices are myriad.

TJFF continues to grow in scope. This year, to bring context and enlightenment to our Israeli film programme, we are delighted to introduce our scholar-in-residence Gillian Helfield. Also, our popular Canadian archival series has been expanded; this year's focus is Jewish contributions to early Canadian film and television.

As we prepare for our 25th anniversary next year, the board and staff are developing a strategic plan to ensure the continued success and sustainability of the Festival. This document will guide our decision-making and set priorities for the next three to five years in the areas of infrastructure, audience growth and diversification, programming and technology, and it will be shared with the TJFF community in the fall.

There are many people to thank for the Festival: our generous sponsors and donors, our dedicated programmers, our tireless office staff, our many volunteers and you, the filmgoers. It is the mission of TJFF to present contemporary and archival international and Canadian films on themes of Jewish culture and identity to an inclusive and diverse audience. You are that audience and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm for the films and your participation in post-film skype interviews and onstage Q and A's with our many guests.

This Festival is for you. Enjoy!
