ETGAR KERET IN PERSON:
Screening & Discussion

90 MIN
THURSDAY APRIL 18 · 12:30 PM · ITH

Don’t miss the opportunity to engage in discussion with award-winning Israeli author and filmmaker Etgar Keret. Keret’s short stories are enjoyed and admired for their casual style, inventiveness and tragic-comic sensibility as well as for exploring ethical dilemmas and the attempt to overcome trauma through magical thinking. He brings allthese qualities to his film work, both as a writer and co-director. A screening of a selection of Keret’s short films will be followed by a discussion of his work, his collaborations and how he brings his voice from the page to the screen.

PROFESSOR MAMLOCK:

100 MIN
APRIL 14 - 5:30PM SHEPPARD 3

Made in Stalin’s Russia, Professor Mamlock was one of the first films worldwide to tackle Nazi anti-Semitism head-on. Based on a famous play by a German-Jewish exile to Moscow, Friedrich Wolf, and directed by an Austrian-Jewish exile, Herbert Rappaport, the film tells with brutal honesty the story of a Jewish doctor and his family as he becomes a victim of the Nazis’ rise to power in 1930s Germany. Professor Mamlock is not only impressively acted but also beautifully shot—and was a hit with audiences both at home and abroad. Newly-translated for this screening.
Guest: Professor and author Olga Gershenson (author of the upcoming The Phantom Holocaust: Soviet Cinema and Jewish Catastrophe)

OLIVER TWIST
UK/Czech Republic/France/Italy 2005, 130 MIN
DIRECTOR: ROMAN POLANSKI
SATURDAY APRIL 20 · 5:00 PM · ITH

Desiring to make a film his children could enjoy, Roman Polanski adapted the Dickens classic, transporting us to early Victorian England to tell the beloved tale of the orphan Oliver Twist, who makes his way to London where he falls into a gang of pickpockets led by the villainous Fagin. Excellent art direction, set and costume design give the film an authentic look and feel, and Polanski's direction captures equally well the novel's grim moments and the more hopeful ones. Featuring strong performances, especially from Ben Kingsley who brings out both the treachery and the kindness in Fagin, this visually effective and literate film makes a wonderful companion to two other movies in this year's Festival: The First Fagin and Roman Polanksi: A Film Memoir.
Warning: Some disturbing scenes
