Description

Based on the bestselling novel by Robert Seethaler, The Tobacconist is a moving drama about loss of innocence. Franz, a naïve 17-year-old, moves from his rural home to Vienna to work as an assistant tobacconist, where his customers include the cigar-smoking Sigmund Freud (played by the late Bruno Ganz). An unlikely friendship is born when Franz asks the esteemed doctor to help him win the affections of a girl. When the Nazis seize power in Austria, Franz must grow up quickly and decide what side he is on. Director Nikolasu Leytner deftly balances the personal and the political with cleverly incorporated dream sequences.
