Fans of the series I’m Dying Up Here should check out this comedy from the early 1980s about the antics of a group of ambitious young stand-ups. Set in a Los Angeles comedy club with Eileen Brennan playing a Mitzi Shore-type manager, The Funny Farm is a 1983 Canadian tax-shelter comedy that was shot in Montreal with a cast made up of a who’s who of Canadian stand-up: Howie Mandel, Mike MacDonald, Marjorie Gross, Howard Busgang and Mark Breslin. This screening is followed by a panel discussion on the early days of Canada’s standup scene featuring Yuk Yuk’s founder Mark Breslin and comedians Howard Busgang, Larry Horowitz and Marla Lukofsky, Briane Nasimok and moderated by Andrew Clark (author of Stand and Deliver: Inside Canadian Comedy).
