Description

Many film fans know the story of Betty Joan Perske, a ‘nice Jewish girl’ who, as a teenage fashion model, was discovered by director Howard Hawks and, thanks to her trademark ‘Look’ (chin down, eyes up) and notorious relationship with Humphrey Bogart, was transformed into sultry screen siren Lauren Bacall. Fewer would know or even guess about her life-long insecurities regarding her looks, her marriages, her acting abilities and her Jewish identity. This engaging portrait of Bacall by French filmmaker Pierre-Henri Safalti (Jazzman from the Gulag, Gainsbourg by Gainsbourg) is refreshingly candid, with some surprising insights into the woman behind the legend.
